GDES Presents “Stone Soup”

On Monday, May 20, 2019, Glen Dale Elementary will present an end-of the year musical celebration at the Strand Theatre at 6:30 PM.

The second grade class will be featured in the musical “Stone Soup,” an inspiring story about the strength people possess when they work together.  The Chorus will close the program with a few vocal selections.

“Stone Soup” is a musically nutritious, character-building recipe for success. The story unfolds as a group of weary travelers arrive in Old Town, where they offer to create a delicious meal from some unexpected ingredients. The gloomy citizens are skeptical, until they learn that wonderful things can happen by sharing resources and working as a team.

The spirit of collaboration is the theme of the program, and is a key ingredient in successful schools. Glen Dale Elementary is proud to share a glimpse of such. Each academic year, educators are required to write instructional goals to enhance student achievement.  Goals are one component of annual teaching evaluations, which is a requirement of the West Virginia Department of Education. Goals are submitted to administrators in the fall, and teachers provide evidence for attaining goals in the spring.

This performance is the final activity of a year-long instructional goal among teachers Kathleen Fox, Janet Marchlenski and Tami Scollick. This trio of educators combined their talents to improve reading fluency among second graders. During reading intervention and music class, students participated in reader’s theatre activities. Final Dibels scores indicated that the students’ scores exceeded the goal. Ultimately, teachers found that these experiences led to improved student confidence, strengthened decoding skills, and built upon their capacity to connect spoken and written language. Fox is the music teacher at Glen Dale. Marchlenski and Scollick teach Second Grade.

This event is open to the public. Donations for future musical performances will be accepted at the door.
