Center McMechen Elementary has wrapped up its schoolwide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) parent/student workshops for the 2018-2019 academic year. The program was designed to allow students to invite their parents to participate in STEM activities during the school day.

The final workshop of the year titled “Reading Under the Stars” aimed to encourage students to read non-fiction books while motivating them to explore science. The 3rd graders and their family members began the session by reading the Dr. Seuss book “There’s No Place Like Space.” The lights were then turned off and special lamps painted the classroom ceiling with stars. A book about space titled “Find the Constellations” was given to families to read under the artificial stars and to take home for summer reading.

Additional STEM parent/student workshops, with various themes such as “Push and Pull Piggies” and “Penguin Cool Down,” were held for all other grade levels throughout the year.
