Robert Kinkade
Mid-June of 1962 and a trip to the Seattle World’s Fair with the WV All State Band was the ultimate way to end a high school adventure. By train, the trip took 4 days each way. We stayed there a very short period; however, being able to represent the state of WV was an honor. Meeting other band members, such as from Belle and Sinks Grove, was perhaps the ultimate reward.
October 1962 until October 1965 was spent serving in the U.S. 2nd Army Band at Fort Meade, MD.
I came back to Moundsville and could not find any work and discovered jobs were available in Pontiac, MI. On November 8, 1965, I hired into Pontiac Motor Division located in Pontiac, MI.
I became active in the UAW and was elected to various positions which culminated in 1978 when I was elected president of the 20,000 + member Local Union 653.
In June 1983, I was asked to become a member of the UAW International Union headquartered in Detroit, MI. I enjoyed many years of being able to assist folks in whatever area was required.
I retired in 2002; however, I still do a little work for the UAW.
I am married to Kaye and have 5 Children and 5 grandchildren. I still reside in MI but maintain fond memories of Moundsville and continue rooting for the Mountaineers.
I am still active playing music in the Waterford New Horizons Concert Band.
