MMS Musicians Heading to Charleston to Perform

Sixteen music students have been selected from Moundsville Middle School to perform at the upcoming West Virginia Music Educators Association Conference.

MMS Strings students Alina Holliday, Sarah McBee, Fiona Ren, Layla Rodgers and Hannah Woods will travel to Charleston this Thursday to rehearse with other West Virginia orchestra students, culminating with a concert on Friday. Both Ren and Woods placed first in their instrument sections.

Sixth Grade MMS Choir members Lauren Whetzel and Emily McBee were hand-selected to perform with more than 200 fourth, fifth and sixth graders from across the Mountain State to represent the school in the WV All-State Children’s Chorus. They will rehearse throughout the conference and perform Friday evening, 7:00 pm at the Clay Center in Charleston.

The Moundsville Middle School 8th Grade Snare Drum Trio was selected to perform at the Solo-N-Ensemble portion of the conference on Thursday. They submitted a recording of their trio and was selected as one of the 26 groups to perform. The MMS Trio consists of Tori Dixon, Mikayla Kazemka and Richard Robinson.

The Marshall County Middle School Percussion Ensemble was chosen this year as one of the X-Ensemble groups to perform at the conference in the capitol city on Friday. The X-ensemble portion of the concert is awarded to highlight ensembles that are not your typical ensemble such as band choir or strings. The ensemble consists of nine Moundsville Middle School percussion students and nine Sherrard Middle School percussion students. The Percussion ensemble is under the direction of Sue Lewicki and Jason Birch. The ensemble submitted a recording of one of their songs and they were chosen to perform a 45-minute concert at the conference. The Moundsville Middle School section of the ensemble consists of Boden Blake, Tori Dixon, Adam Evans, Mikayla Kazemka, Noel Littell, Liam Marlin, Richard Robinson, Xavier Wells and Kaelyn Wyatt. Only two ensembles were chosen out of the entire state and both groups are from Marshall County. The other group is John Marshall High School’s Percussion group.

The annual WV Music Educators Association Conference in Charleston runs this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
