All CTE classes at John Marshall High School are a simulated workplace, meaning students have to clock in and out as if they were on the job, wear their uniforms, and abide by all rules on a contract that has to be signed by the student at the start of the class or “job”. Every student must apply to take a CTE class and they will be interviewed at the end of the year prior to taking the class. Acceptance into a CTE class is based off of the interview, attendance, and GPA. Many CTE classes have a limited number of students who can be accepted, so students always have a second choice class.
Welding
An extremely popular class at John Marshall is welding. Jayson Summers, the instructor of the class says that this is the class to be taking if you are interested in a welding career. “In the class students will learn to build and repair metal constructs while working with aluminum, cast Iron, stainless and mild steel.”¹ After completion of the class students will receive a certification.

Classes are taught by Tammy Durrah and Lora Ray. Junior year in the class will consist of learning about the systems of the human body and other requirements need to work in the heath field. The senior’s travel to do on-site clinicals in rotations at The Good Shepherd Nursing Home, and even shadowing at Reynolds Memorial Hospital. Upon completion of the program students will take the WV state certification test, and if the student passes they will be eligible to work as a certified nursing assistant (CNA). If students want to further their healthcare education at a college, being a member of this program is a great place to start.

Students start out by familiarizing themselves with the materials and equipment, then students learn techniques that will be used in the later classes, students are introduced to mechanical drafting, including the application of dimensioning techniques, and finally the last class taken students will discover architectural drafting and learn the design behind plumbing and electrical fixations.
Agriculture
Nicole Shipman, the teacher of the many agriculture classes offered at John Marshall takes a family approach towards teaching. In her classes students may experience little time in the class room while a majority of projects are handled outdoors. Many students enjoy time in the greenhouse as well as the few lessons that are taught in the classroom. The family environment is a welcoming factor to the many students beginning their CTE journey. Many students say the jobs they participate in are great experiences, from flood clean up to planting the garden. Shipman’s students take pride in the work that they do, and are often asked to help in miscellaneous tasks around the school. Many of the students that take this path for CTE also participate in FFA.
