July 2015 Class Dinner

The rainy and cool May has made of a great blooming Spring season in June. This also has applied to the reappearance of the smiling faces of classmates at dinner. We had 18 at the month's gathering. Ruth Hunter Wilson and Sharon Richmond Van Scyoc were smiling faces that we had not seen for several months. The regulars are also so welcome to see as we gather.

Sharon returns after the trauma of the loss of her gentleman friend as well as sustaining the process of overcoming health issues.

Ruth continues to battle her health issues and yet maintains a great smile and attitude.

The time is getting near when major steps will need to be made to get ready for the All Class Reunion which is in just a few months. Mick and Gary Church attended an All Class Reunion Committee meeting on the June 1 and learned more about the event. So here is what they have to share. We remind you that all events, except individual class meetings, will be held within the walls of the old West Virginia Penitentiary in the Educational Facility where the 2010 reunion dinner was held.

Be aware that further developments will be finalized as the months draw nearer to the event weekend and modification could apply.

On Friday September 4, registration will be conducted 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Educational Building for everyone to check in and get their reunion package. A representative of the Marshall County Convention and Visitor's Bureau (CVB) will be there as well to allow you to purchase the tour Bundle Packages if you are going to visit the tourist attractions that the community has been preparing for your visit. The tours include the WV Prison Tour, the Marx Toy Museum, the Palace of Gold and Temple tour, the Fostoria Museum tour, and we hope to have the Cockayne Homestead open again by then. Other attraction like the Grave Creek Mound and Archaeological Complex have free admission. The Bundle Package is a $65 value for $20 allowing you to visit all sites with this one purchase. Know that the Old WV Prison Tour is ranked as one of the top 10 tours in WV.  Yes, Mick is on the Tourism Committee in the county so he is anxious for you to visit these places that have worked so hard to prepare a significant tour for your visit. Oh, the Bundle Package also offer discounts on meals and on purchases with participating vendors.

Friday Golf will be arranged by calling Rudy Zatezalo for the Country Club and Lyle Yoho for Grand Vue's Nine Hole Par Three course.

Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. is the parade up Jefferson Avenue for the Queens through the history of the High School and includes the Alumni Committee Members.

The Hospitality facility will be in the Educational Facility which will be from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Draft Beer and soft drinks will be provided other wise BYOB. This is a cash bar arrangement both times.

Saturday continues the registration 9:00 to 12:00 plus are the individual class gatherings, Boys of Summer, Golf Tournaments at the Country Club and at Grand Vue, and the Sports banquet will be at the Trinity Church at 1:00 p.m. The big event for Saturday is the Dinner Dance where we return to the Educational Facility starting with the Social Hour at 6:00 p.m. followed by Dinner at 7:00 p.m. which will be catered by Bob's Lunch Catering. Draft Beer and Soft Drinks will be provided otherwise BYOB. Music entertainment will be provided by the band Deja Vue'.

Sunday afternoon, we return to the Educational facility where out on the lawn area we will have the social time tent with picnic items vended by Vagabond Kitchens and Rock-n-Rowdy's catering services. The picnic items will be served from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Vesper services will start at 6:00 p.m. under the direction of Duane Clarke featuring the message being given by Rev. Dr.  Norma Kerns Barnhart.

Hope that you can see that many people have given lots of their time arranging this special time just for you to come visit with old High School friends. The advantage of the All Class reunion is that friends from the other classes will be there for you to visit with too. When we all look at the Memorial Pages of the web site, we see many friends that we missed seeing one more time before they passed. Come to make sure that you don't miss that chance this time.

To date, these are the only registrations:
Susan Wilson Burk
Mick Burk
Jerry Chambers
Paul Tucker
Louis Howard
Darlene Yost Bush
Doris Jean Blake Clark
Donna Best Durbin

You can see that we need you to get your registrations in so Donna and others can arrange our Brunch and activities. Please respond soon even though you have to the end of July when registration closes.  We've all been in charge of some event where planning is required for an estimated number and know what it is like to wait for the numbers to settle. It is much easier when you have some idea before the last minute.

Donna reported on her communications;
Michael and Donna Holliday reported that Mike had his other knee replaced in April. The recovery process has been coming along well as he attended his son's wedding not too long ago. He said that they intend to get to the reunion but are not sure that they can do both the August Class Picnic and the September Reunion. That's a long stay over.

When Mick and Susan visited Dale and Judy McLaughlin Allen in California, the Allens were intending to be on the move again. Their plans included looking at facilities in Tennessee and Florida. We understand that they are presently in Florida.

Elaine Tatich Koontz  lost her husband Larry Koontz as he passed in May 2015.   Donna sent Elaine a Class Card of condolence upon the news of his passing.

Judy Clark and Terry Shimp emailed that they were looking forward to attending the reunion. It will be good to see these old friends and we hope that they get the registration sent in soon. Notice: it is a reminder to you too, ha.

Darlene Yost Bush emailed Donna and, like the other classmates, has had John "Buster" Hummell on her mind. She hopes news from him is good for his well being.

We asked Ruthy about her condition and she said she is still kicking.  Like the rest of us the kicks are not as high as they use to be but it was a joy to have her share smiles with us. She thanked everyone for the card and concerns as they all help keep her going.

We have been blessed these last few months to have Wanda and Kenny Truex drive up from a couple of hours away to attend the dinners.  We appreciate their efforts as they contribute to the joy of the dinner meeting. Kenny said that he has 2/3 of his Corvette stripped for painting to be included in the reunion parade. Kenny asked again, along with others, about any news about Paul Gatewood. That window has remained closed as no one there had any news. If you do, please share.

Wanda has had a sister pass since we last met so we expressed our condolences to her at the dinner.  Donna had already had sent the condolence card to Wanda from the class.

Mick got an email from Vicki and Jim Fuller, Fred's brother.  The email offered a web link to a National News article featuring their son Ryan. Dr. Ryan Fuller is the Clinical Director of the New York Behavioral Health Center and has been focusing his attention on the elements of violence in our society. Wow, that's a pretty big issue to deal with. To see his article and interview, click on or copy and paste this web address to your address line.

For the local folks, the alumni reunion will be the focus in the Noon News at WTRF-TV on July 13 when Mick will present information as part of the news interview.

Mick has been going around to the reunion booklet donators getting them ready for everyone to be in town. Lexie Riggs Hanket  has been working her magic with getting the details in line which includes involving the Moundsville Middle School Leo's Club with Mike Eskridge to be prepared to put the large class pictures in the Jefferson Ave. businesses.  When you all get to the reunion, you must remember to thank Lexie for maintaining the reunion event for over the last 55 years. She runs this show along with many helpers but if it weren't for Lexie, this privilege to have an organized visit with friends would not happen.

Our class dinner on occasions has the honor and privilege to have the company of the classmate's family members. This is a real honor to have them join us. Again, grand daughter Paige joined Carol Perkins Martin at dinner as anyone can tell, her enthusiasm and concern for her grandmother contributes to a super feeling for us all. We do enjoy the family and friends that join with our dinner conversations.

Gary Church finally let wife Teresa join us for dinner this time too. Really Teresa's shift work has not allowed her open time when we meet. At least she still sends us Gary. Gary has been a faithful member of the Reunion Committee so don't forget to thank him for his contributions in September.  Gary and Mick get emails from Bob Kinkade so were both surprised that Bob's name was not on the reunion list yet.

Hope that you all remember the time before the start of our 50th Reunion when Mick had to get on Walter "Nifty" Wilson to get him here? Nifty said, "Oh I'll not know or recognize anyone and be embarrassed." Then after the good time we had visiting and seeing that everyone is in the same boat, he said. "Man, that was fun!" He hated to part from visiting with these old friends. This is the kind of experience that we want you to have this time. Come, have a good time. It is our desire that you have the same pleasurable reaction that Nifty had and we'd love to hear you say that you had fun.

All Class Reunion in September .

Classmates:
The new feature is an effort for us to catch up on the lives of classmates by way of the Internet. It is sort of like having a “classmate of the month” thing.  Please read the articles associated with each photo and consider entering an article of where in the world are you now so we can all catch up on the history of our friends.  Simply generate a brief statement of your life history since high school, add a couple pictures in the “jpg” format, and email it to me as I will prepare it to be submitted for posting on our Alumni web site. I think you would enjoy the responses as well as sharing your story with those that still care.
