Elementary Students Make Display for Moundsville Business

Thirty-five Gifted and Enrichment students at Central Elementary School and Washington Lands Elementary School, along with their teacher Lauren Yurko, worked with Marcy and Nate Harler, the new owners of the Roller Derby in Moundsville, to create a way community members could reminisce about the history of the local, iconic roller rink.

Students explain how they did the project for the Roller Derby.

Marcy came to each school and talked to groups about what they wanted out of the project, similar to how a client would conference with a business. They used photos submitted to the Roller Derby by community members to create a photo collage. Along with this step, they learned a little about how photographs are printed.

Students also created interview questions and recorded themselves interviewing community members. Then, they created QR codes, for anyone who is at the Roller Derby, to scan and watch the interviews. Finally, students designed and 3-D printed roller skates. They also painted them.

All of the students’ work is on display at the Roller Derby for all to see once the rink opens.
